Work afloat, the right reflexes

12 January 2023

Keeping your vessel functional and in good condition is a common and legitimate concern, and the winter season is particularly favourable for vessel maintenance. Before getting started, we would like to remind you of the steps to follow in order to consider your renovations with peace of mind.
The application of each step of this procedure is the best guarantee that the work will be carried out without any problems and with respect for all port users.
  • Make sure that the planned work is not prohibited
    • Any work that could pollute the water or the quays or cause a nuisance to the neighbourhood must be carried out in a shipyard.
    • The following are not permitted afloat
    • work on the hull (live work/dead work); stripping, sanding, varnishing and painting on deck and superstructure (except for touching up or repairs on small surfaces).
    • Making a work request

  • Prior to any work being carried out afloat, you are invited to collect the work request form from the Vigie.
    • You should fill in the form, describing precisely the work planned and the measures (equipment, process, instructions) that you will take to avoid accidental pollution
    • The work may only begin after express authorisation from the harbour master, within 48 hours of the application being submitted.
  • Carry out the work in accordance with the authorisation granted
    • You must ensure that the terms and conditions of the authorisation are respected throughout the works and, in case of doubt or difficulty, contact the Vigilance Department.

In the event of non-compliance with the obligations of the port regulations or the conditions of the authorisation, the work will be immediately suspended

  • Immediately take all appropriate measures in the event of accidental pollution
    • If pollution of the water or the quays is imminent or occurs, immediately alert the Vigilance and/or the port police and take all appropriate measures to avoid or limit the extent of the pollution.
    • In the event of accidental pollution, you will be held liable and the lump sum pollution compensation will be due in accordance with our conditions and rates.
