Archeology, an amazing find in Port Vauban

24 February 2023

Last January, during the installation of new buoys for the mooring of ships in the Anse Saint Roch, we had the pleasant surprise of discovering 5 exceptional pieces of artillery dating from the 16th century and decorated with fleurs-de-lis and an ecclesiastical coat of arms. An emergency expertise was carried out by the archaeologists of the Drassm bringing together all the actors of the territory: City of Antibes, Port Vauban, CCI, DTTM, Antibes Archaeology Museum.
A scientific committee will be set up to carry out an exhaustive study of the cannons: archaeologists, historians specialising in the period, artillery, and experts in naval architecture will work together to put this discovery into its historical context, of successive wars between François I and Charles V. We will keep you informed of the results of this research!
