The SNSM (Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer) is a voluntary association whose main mission is to rescue people in danger at sea and on the coastline. At sea, as on land, they work to save lives, prevent accidents and train volunteers to rescue people.
Established in 1959, the Antibes SNSM station in the harbour master’s office is the largest rescue operation in the Alpes-Maritimes. Their 17-metre unsinkable boat Notre Dame de la Garoupe II can reach speeds of 25 knots and enables its volunteer crew to get out to sea within 15 minutes for rescue missions in one of the busiest areas in Europe.

In 1896, a few members of the Club Nautique de Nice, founded in 1893, decided to create a yacht club division in Antibes, where they lived. The non-profit association was officially created in 1927 and named the Société des Régates d’Antibes. At the time, yachting was a sport reserved for the wealthy, who owned large sailing ships with professional crews.
Over time, the Club has become one of the largest in France, welcoming experienced and young sailors alike. It is also a regional institution, teaching thousands of young people to sail each year.
Created over 400 years ago, this seafarers’ guild, which aims to arbitrate disputes between fishermen, is one of the city’s oldest associations and the largest (in terms of fishermen) in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
This community is very active in Antibes and is historically managed by four Prud’Homme councillors, but there can be more when the community is larger. The 1er Prud’Homme manages the guild’s affairs and convenes the community’s fishermen to make important decisions.
To become a Prud’homme, you have to fulfil various criteria: be a French national, be part of the fishing community, be at least 30 years old, or at least 35 to be 1erPrud’homme, and have at least 6 years of experience in the field. Jérôme Bottero is currently the 1er Prud’homme for Antibes.
